This is my final series of work inspired by the ceramic artist Jennifer Mccurdy. Her thrown forms are organic shapes that she carves into vessels. Her work is very delicate and detailed. She often uses gold leaf to embellish her work and create depth. I used clay and wheel throwing techniques to create my work. Once the clay was leather hard, I carved the designs into the vessels. I then used white acrylic to coat the outside and a bisque firing. I then used gold paint to create the look of the inside of my vessels.
I used the colors and organic patterns to mimic the work of Jennifer Mccurdy, as these are two very characteristic elements of her work. I wanted the focus to be the inside of my vessels, which is why I painted the outside a neutral color. These all have balance, contrast and unity, as they are all part of a larger set of work. They also use form and space to create interesting shapes.
The meaning and purpose of these was to reflect nature, as well as reflect another artists work. Inspiration from nature can create interesting work, as well as ideas that you may not have previously had before.
I really enjoy this group of pieces, as they are very appealing to the eye, and are very intricate. I usually do not do this sort of work, and I found it to be very fun and a new way to use wheel thrown work.
